I recently received an early beta version of ON1 Photo RAW, and was given special permission from ON1 Photo to share a short video on this upcoming software. The software you see in this video is not the final version, so some things may change between now and the release in November. Also, I had the latest version of Mac OS Sierra installed on my computer when I recorded this video so it is working in that operating system.

Hi Nicole! Thanks for the sneak preview on the upcoming on1 photo raw. I noticed that there is no crop option in develop. Is this feature going to be added later on?
I sent a message to ON1 to find out for you :)
Update: I did get confirmation that “… there will be crop, local adjustments and retouching tools in Develop and Effects.”
This is going to be great. I’ve been waiting several months for the release (paid for). My problem is going to see where my suite of Topaz Labs falls. Did I say I use Nik, Topaz, and Lightroom. I did get a lot from your Effects e-book and hope there is another covering the whole program.
Hi Niclole. Do you knoe if we are going to be able to make the equivilent of virtual copies of each image? Thanks.
I think virtual copies are planned, but it will come later, not with initial Photo Raw release.
Hi Nicole:
Thanks for the Sneak Peek…looks great! I noticed you used .dng files in the video and then you talked about Sidecar files. Correct me if I’m wrong but I was under the impression that when using .dng files, the adjustments were written into the file itself…no need for Sidecar files. Is the implementation of .dng files in ON1 Photo RAW different than what you might expect when using Lightroom? Thanks very much
That’s a really good point, Richard. It looks like ON1 is using a proprietary filetype to add the edits to the photos, so I don’t expect it to add the data “into” the DNG file like it would with Lr or ACR.
On1 have stated that they will not write to DNG files.
It took almost 10 sec for Browse to apply/overlay the edits?
Remember, this is an early Beta version :) I don’t think that the preview function in Browse is fully enabled at this point, so hopefully we’ll see faster loading in the full version.
Is there or will there be a tool to import a lightroom catalog and then apply the settings in ON1 Photo Raw?
This would help users switchig from Lightroom to the new ON1 software.
That I am not sure about, but my guess is that they have a lot to gain with creating that feature! As soon as I find out more about those details I’ll write up an article on my blog.
Thanks for the quick reply! Having this feature would be great.
I believe ON1 are releasing a tool early 2017 to enable migration from LR to ON1 with all settings and adjustments. :-)
Thanks for the sneak preview. It does look very promising.
One question about the sidecar file — any compatibility with the LR’s sidecar files? Either or both ways?
They’ve said that they can’t read Adobe’s sidecar files so there’s no chance of any compatibility.
My guess, from what I know, is that they are not cross-compatible.
Hi Nicole. Thanks for this.
1. will there be a “History” window/file/record/pdf of what actions were done to an image?
2. Tell OnOne to take their time and get it right, or as right as they can for first release. I realize they won’t get everything the first time. That said, most users appreciate the power of the product and would be willing to wait.
I’m not sure about those details, but I’ll add it to my list of things to ask the team!
Hi Nicole, have they added dual monitor facility yet???? that is a deal breaker for me!!
Thanks, George.
Why On1 if I have PS?
They are just different tools. It’s kind of like asking a painter why they use more than one type of brush :) I use both, depending on the style I’m trying to achieve.
Re Sidecar Files:
So if I write sidecar files for any work done in either Photoshop or Lightroom to my .NEF files and want to do further adjustments in One1 Photo Raw I what happens
On1 can’t read your Adobe sidecar files so you’ll have to either export a TIFF/PSD etc. to On1 or start again on the original in On1.
Hi Nicole! Love your Sneak Peek! Very interesting!
Nicole thanks for the preview. Do you know if they will apply the built in lens correction information from the Fuji X raw files with Fuji X-lenses? Any idea if we can turn this on or off if it does allow the correction? I sure hope they implement the built in lens corrections. Thanks.
I don’t know about lens correction (I’ll be sure to ask) but I do know that they are adding Fujifilm X-trans sensor edit-ability in the final release.
Looks great. Is there an auto button for the major raw processing parameters (e.g., exposure, black, white) like in PS? I like to use this to get starting points for my raw processing in PS.
Yep, there are “Auto” buttons on the panels. If you look closely you can see them in my video.
Well done video! I am moving more and more away from LR & PS to On1. I use a lot of textures and local micro adjustments and On1 is a killer for these. I hope they don’t mess with the local adjustments and over-engineer them. Thanks for your contribution in our education.
In your opinion and from what you have seen/heard, is ON1 RAW going to make many of us enthusiasts give up LR and use only ON1 stand alone? I am a Fuji shooter and the X-Trans RAW file conversion is very important. Do you have any indication, since you also use Fuji, if the X-Trans conversion will be competitive or better? As always, I can’t wait for your instruction video on ON1 RAW to appear …. now get to work.
I’m sure that there will be many people who will move from Lr to ON1, it just depends on a person’s workflow, etc. I use Lightroom very heavily so personally I will not drop Lr, but I will definitely still be using ON1 (just as I do now). As for the Fujifilm X-Trans, it is not yet added to the beta so I don’t have any info on that at this point.
Can we save settings made to an image as a pre-set, lens corrections, colour temp, etc., as we can with ACR, so that if we have images which are nearly the same we can apply the preset and tweak settings to suit that particular image?
Yes, we will be able to create presets in the Develop module. It’s not fully implemented in the beta yet so I am unable to show it at this point.
Thanks for taking the time to make this ON1 Photo Raw Sneak Preview video available. For me it was most beneficial to start to appreciate the photo workflow form, fit, and function for what will soon become available.
I’m anxiously awaiting for your Nicolesy’s Sky & Cloud Overlay Set to become available.
Hi Nicole, have they added dual monitor facility yet???? that is a deal breaker for me!!…..
I wonder if you saw this, Nichole, or don’t you know?…sent yesterday.
Hi George, I don’t know yet but I’ll add it to my list to find out :)
Thanks, Nicole, I’m sure quite a few will be interested!!
Hi Nicole.
For my photo group review sessions, I like to add camera settings data to the photos – focal length, shutter speed. f stop, ISO.
In Lightroom I use Mogrify2 at export to achieve this.
Do you know a way to achieve this in ON1 with a plug in perhaps?
With ON1 Raw due, I am starting to think about my workflow being completely within ON1 and to not use Lightroom at all – possibly!
KRs Frank
Hi Frank! I’m not sure about this, my guess is that it is not something that ON1 RAW will have, at least not in the beginning. But I’ll be sure to ask them next week when I go visit them.
Awesome!! Thank you for your Raw video sneak peak
Thanks for your preview of the new forthcoming On1 Raw. I too am excited on receiving the application when it becomes available.
By the way, I enjoy your video presentations and tutorial. Very informative and easy to follow. Keep up the good work.
Nicole, thank you for the “raw” preview. You answered the one issue that I was most concerned about and that is the issue of a side car for adjustments made to a raw image. It is the one reason I have not used On1 for my main editing program. With that issue addressed I will probably be using On1 raw more than ever. If they, at On1, also address the issue of moving Lightroom catalogs to the new On1 raw…that would be a real game changer. AWESOME!!!
Hello, can you tell something about the picture quality in RAW Photo? I meen this is the most importend thing for photographers. Thanx
Once I get a final version to play with I can share some results (right now it’s still in early Beta).
They are very close to a pre-release and you may already worked with it. Do you have an updated sense of the RAW conversion quality as compared to Lightroom or Capture One Pro?
Nice review Nicole, I just bought ON1 Photo RAW but got a couple questions now I know they will probably fix it but I get a lot of crashes like going from browse to develop it would just say not responding, also where would the lens profiles be at? maybe they will add that in the final release? thank you
Chris.
I installed the release version of ON1 Photo RAW and it fries after start with saying not responding, so fare no positive help for 3 days from the support team.
Can someone help? I try everything that read about this problem.
Hi Klaus, there’s not a lot that I can do to help in regards to technical issues. My suggestion would be to uninstall, reboot your computer, and then reinstall and see if that helps.
